PLEASE, NO invitations or self promotions, THEY WILL BE DELETED. My photos are FREE to use, just give me credit and it would be nice if you let me know, thanks. These were beside the Rock of the Virgin but I could not find any information about them until today - thanks to raffaele pagani It turns out that "The Surprise" was a corvette in November 1893, despite the storm, it put to sea with its load of slate destined for London. It was a mistake because the sea left them without sails and rudder and it run aground near the Virgin of the Rock. The efforts of people attempting to send a rope to rescue the sailors did not work. A crew member of the Surprise even jumped into the water to try to catch the rope but the waves were to much. The hull was breaking up, three survivors were floating in the sea, but nothing could be done because they disappeared also. One body recovered, that of Joseph Calvez, is buried in the cemetery of Sabaou in a tomb offered by the city. |
