Title
The Terrace at Tortoni's, 1847
Description
Tortoni's was a café on the Boulevard des Italiens founded by two Italians, Veloni and Tortoni, to provide "good ice" to the French. The women depicted in this plate both carry brightly colored and very large cashmere shawls. Their skirts are very wide and were probably supported by crinolines. The width of their skirts is accented by the narrowness of their corseted waists. The woman on the left wears a small jacket and her skirt is accented by flounces.
