| Description |
This fox was very friendly and would often curl up next to the excavation and watch us work (and sometimes fall asleep --- archaeology is not always that exciting). The tarp was covering part of the excavation to keep it dry. The notebook (which the fox ran off with on a couple of occasions) was a record of our work. Next to it, in the green box, is a tape measure and next to that is a case for a Brunton compass. Under the fox is a bottle of insect repellent (very ineffective; the improved varieties were just being developed) and behind that is a bag for the artifacts. Above the fox's head is one of our backpacks which contained various supplies including lunch. Resting on top of that is a loaded sawed-off shotgun which we were required to carry in case we ran into a Kodiak bear and couldn't get out of the way (the trail we used from our campsite was also a bear trail). Bob Mace and I were the ones who excavated this site, called the "Isolated Housepit" since it was on a knoll far distant from the main "Kukak Village" site. This is a high-resolution, correctly oriented, version of a previously posted slide. |
