Description
English: Fort Vancouver was armed for war, if war was indeed required. It owned the majority of the arms, gunpowder, cannons and balls in the Oregon country. In fact, when the Americans went to war against the Cayuse Indians in 1847, they had to come to the Hudson's Bay Company to beg for weapons. Unable to loan weapons due to the business and political climate, James Douglas, then Chief Factor with Peter Skene Ogden, instead made a personal loan to the Oregon colonists to help pay for supplies. Though the cannons often signaled incoming and departing ships on the nearby Columbia River, they were never fired in anger. The bastion is octagonal in shape, with a cannon in each side's window. The cannons here are eight-pound cannons, signifying the weight of the cannonballs fired from them. Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, Washington
