Description
English: Fort Vancouver was self-sufficient to every degree possible and the blacksmiths created everything from cooking utensils to beaver traps. The forgery ran on fire and billowed air and blacksmiths kept busy doing dirty hard work. Iron and larger items (such as the anvil on the right) were imported from Canada and England. The blacksmiths, though of a lower class than the factors and traders, were still highly treated and lived within the fort. They were usually Scots or Irish. Today, blacksmiths work in the shop, demonstrating for visitors the way everyday items were made in the 1830s and 40s. Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, Washington
