| Description |
English: Former Schoolhouse at Hutton-le-Hole. This has been a gift shop since around 1971, before that it was the Primary School but when pupil numbers fell below ten it was decided to bus them to Kirkbymoorside.
After lunch the children played on the village green by the building. Girls were supposed to play to the North of the school, Boys to the South. at 1pm, the schoolteacher called everyone in with a single ring of the bell, still present, by a rope inside the single classroom. Historically this was listened for by local farmers who would then go home for their lunch too. The board on the side of the building shows a game of 'Merrils' which is also the name of the shop. This is a local name for 'Nine Mens Morris'. |
