Summary
[edit]DescriptionFormer Lancaster High School (now Middle School), Lancaster, New York - 20220305.jpg |
English: Lancaster Middle School, 148 Aurora Street at Madison Street, Lancaster, New York, March 2022. A handsome Neoclassical structure built in 1922 to a design by Buffalo-based architect Martin C. Miller, this NRHP-eligible property is a typical example of the school architecture of the era. With an exterior faced in brick and accentuated by smooth-textured stone trim, the façade is centered on a projecting central bay where most of the interesting architectural detail is concentrated: it contains the main entrance and - above it, consecutively - a trio of two-story window bays separated by a distyle of engaged columns with unusual Tower of the Winds-order capitals (acanthus leaves surrounding palm leaves), a stone panel engraved with the words HIGH SCHOOL, a dentil row, and, atop the parapet at the roofline, a decorative anthemion antefix. Flanking this portion of the building on each side, a stone water table separates the first and second floors and the upper stories consisting of a repeated pattern of triple windows separated by twin brick pilaster strips with Doric capitals. The projecting bays on the far sides of the building are delineated on the bottom floor by stone quoins. Lancaster High School was established in 1894 and previously occupied a now-demolished building on School Street at what's now the site of the Lord Lancaster Apartments. The building seen here was the second to house the institution and served its original function for only a relatively short time: though a 1935 addition expanded the school's size by nearly half, the building was vacated in favor of the present Lancaster Central High School building in time for the 1957-58 school year. The building functions today as the district's middle school. |
