Summary[edit]

Description
English: Built circa 1850 as a Greek Revival-style house for James Fitzsimmons, this building was heavily renovated to house the Fort Henry Club in 1902, with the addition of Classical Revival-style elements under the direction of Edward B. Franzheim, and the addition of a rear wing and fourth floor in 1923, under the direction of Charles W. Bates. The building features a brown and buff brick exterior with one-over-one windows, a cornice with dentils, a two-story front portico atop a stone plinth-like terrace with fluted ionic columns and a cornice with dentils, a south wing with a sunroom on the second floor, which features casement windows, fanlight transoms, engaged fluted ionic columns, and large windows with decorative lintels on the first floor, decorative banded trim at the base, a fourth floor with blind arches on the front facade and side facades of the front wing, a side entrance doorway with a fanlight transom, flanked by ionic pilasters, which is situated next to an elliptical oxeye window, and decorative relief panels on the parapet with festoons. The building is a contributing structure in the Wheeling Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The building presently houses various office tenants.
