Summary[edit]

Description
English: Former Embankment Another attempt at land reclamation, this one an ambitious one to drain the entire Thorney Channel by building an embankment across the mouth between Cobnor Point and Pilsey Island. The embankment barrier was made by building a ‘borrow’ bank. Stakes were then driven into the top of this to form a strong matrix. The embankment was further built up using rock chalk which enabled the stakes to bind it together. This was completed in the early 1870s but lasted a little under two months before the embankment was breached by a gale. The stakes can still be seen reaching from Cobnor Point to Thorney Island at low tide forming two islands North and South Stakes. This view is from the end of the beach looking towards the northern most point of North Stakes Island now a protected nesting place for birds. Cobnor Rither separates the two.
