Not the most photogenic of bus termini. Former 97 bus terminus, Closed owing to development of and extension to Westfield Shopping centre, Stratford City bus station. During the Olympic Games, the temporary terminus will be Stratford. This terminus seems to have been used after trolleybus replacement c. 1960 for the then 34 and 170 routes. Also very handy for visiting the nearby Galleon Tours depot. In the 1970s it was briefly the southern end point for the new Chingford -Leyton 269 service which was subsequently rebranded as the 97 in 1981, as part of the former 69, continuing this form until 2011. Originally it was a trolleybus turning circle, but I don't find on old maps any routes terminating here. Perhaps it was to turn short workings? Someone will know. Stop press - Olympic games 2012 has caused the lay-by to re-open. |
