Summary[edit]

Description

The James Cycle Co Ltd., Greet, Birmingham, England was one of many famous British cycle and motorcycle makers centred around the English Midlands, particularly Birmingham. Most of their light motorcycles used Villiers and later AMC two-stroke engines. James was taken over by Associated Motor Cycles in 1951 and combined with Francis Barnett in 1957. James were prolific bicycle and motorcycle manufacturers from 1897 to 1966, when they became casualties of the decline in the British motorcycle industry under pressure from Japanese imports. After experiencing some financial difficulties in the early fifties, James were taken over by Associated Motorcycles Ltd. (AMC) in 1951. Unfortunately for James, the AMC style of management was not to be its saviour. AMC took the decision to drop Villiers engines, in favour of their own, which were designed by Vincent Piatti but this was the beginning of the end for James Motorcycles.

The Captain was the Deluxe model of the range which again had a girder front fork and rigid frame. In 1950 the rubber bushed telescopic front forks became standard with an optional plunger rear suspension. It was equipped with the Villiers 6E 197cc Two Stroke engine, 3 speed gearbox and weighed just 190lbs.
