Formation: Cascade River Schist Rock Type: Schist Found: In places west of Newhalem, Washington along Highway 20 and on the Cascade River Road Schist As accumulating sedimentary deposits (shale, sandstone, and limestone) were buried, they slowly changed. Heat caused new crystals to form while pressure reformed and folded their layers. (Notice the sparkling crystals of mica that are common in this type of rock.)
