Жертвами этой войны, продолжавшейся более четырех лет, с августа 1914 по ноябрь 1918 года, стали свыше девяти миллионов участников боевых действий. Кроме того, в результате войны или ее последствий погибло семь миллионов гражданских лиц. Le conflit fit rage pendant plus de quatre ans, entre août 1914 et novembre 1918, avec un bilan en pertes humaines dépassant les neuf millions de combattants. En outre, pas moins de sept millions de civils périrent pendant la guerre ou moururent de ses conséquences. À la conférence de paix de Paris de 1919, le président américain Woodrow Wilson et les dirigeants d'autres pays fondèrent, dans l'espoir de garantir qu'un tel conflit destructeur ne se reproduisît plus jamais, la Société des Nations, qui devint la pierre angulaire de l'ordre international de l'après-guerre. Toutefois, l'organisation se révéla impuissante et ne put empêcher le déclenchement d'une guerre encore plus dévastatrice en 1939. La Société des Nations fut officiellement dissoute en avril 1946, lorsque les Nations Unies furent créées après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. The war raged for more than four years, from August 1914 to November 1918, and resulted in the deaths of more than nine million combatants. As many as seven million civilians also were killed in the war or died as a consequence of it. In the hope of ensuring that such a destructive conflict would never recur, U.S. president Woodrow Wilson and other leaders established, at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, the League of Nations, which was to be the centerpiece of a postwar international order. The organization ultimately proved powerless, however, to prevent the outbreak of an even more destructive war in 1939. The League of Nations was formally dissolved in April 1946 with the founding, after World War II, of the United Nations. The archives of the League were transferred to the United Nations and are housed at the UN office in Geneva. They were inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World register in 2010.
