Summary[edit]

Description
English: Built in 1825, this Greek Revival-style building was constructed for the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Wheeling. The building was renovated in 1836 under the direction of John Chislett with the addition of an octagonal tower, which was removed during a later renovation. Subsequent renovations were carried out in 1839, 1854, 1871, 1876, 1885, 1892 (under the direction of Leiner and Faris), 1948, 1956-1958, with the addition of a Colonial Revival-style education building to the south, under the direction of Harold E. Wagoner. During these renovations, the building took its present form, with the addition of stucco cladding over the original brick facade, and the replacement of elements on the exterior and interior. The building is clad in stucco with a tetrastyle ionic portico with a front pediment, doric pilasters, stained glass windows, decorative window hoods, red brick cladding on the side and rear facades, and a two-story red brick educational wing at the southeast corner of the building. The building is a contributing structure in the Wheeling Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
