English: In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the area south of Seattle's Yesler Way was a seedy, rough neighborhood, notorious for its gambling and other forms of vice. Signs in image: Chicago Bar. Chicago House. Baths 15 cents, 2 for 25 cents. Laundry. Union Saloon. Clark-Miller Co. - Blow [Piping?]. Drug Co. Laundry. [...egert] Machine Works. Restaurant. Covey Bros. Sheet Metal Works. Karl Kiefer Cleaning Dyeing and Repairing Works. Old Clothes. Handwritten on sleeve: First Ave So. 1911. Caption by MOHAI staff.
Chicago House was at 508 Commercial (now First Avenue South) just south of King Street, so that positions this pretty precisely. |
