Summary[edit]

Description
English: Fires dotted the landscape south of the Himalaya Mountains in both Pakistan and India in early May 2018. The fires are outlined in red. Though no single fire is large or particularly smoky, the fires cumulatively produce a heavy veil of smoke that swaths northern India and Pakistan. The location, widespread nature, and number of fires suggest that these fires were deliberately set to manage land.

Fire provides a simple and easy way to removed crop stubble and clear pastures for reseeding and is often used in agricultural regions to manage land. However, both fire and removing stubble tend to degrade topsoil over time, especially when compared to no-till techniques or turning vegetative matter into the soil at the end of the growing season. Fire also reduces air quality both by releasing particulate matter and from release of a number of chemicals, including carbon monoxide.
