English: Gary Mesa-Gaido’s digital collage series references String Theory, and the areas of quantum physics and relativity. He is inspired to visualize this theory, not literally, but through invention. These works digitally combine macro images (for example an aerial view of the ground from an airplane) with micro images (for instance zooming in on North American flora; Buddhist, Mayan and Incan stone carvings from treks in the Himalayan and Andean Mountains; and peeling paint on walls in Cuba). Ratios relevant to the golden section and Fibonacci sequence are also referenced in Mesa-Gaido’s digital collage work. The abstract, composited images are later infused with color from the visible electromagnetic spectrum. Researching the latest technologies in digital output and printmaking, Gary Mesa-Gaido utilizes the dye-sublimation process of printing on aluminum; this particular metal is more reflective than traditional printing on paper, and thus more accurately represents his digital images’ color, light, and interference layers when exhibited in an analogue form. |
