Summary[edit]

Description

Faults are common in orogenic belts throughout the world. Faults are fractures or fracture systems in rocks along which there has bee differential displacement. Dip-slip faults involve movement in non-horizontal directions. Examples include normal faults and reverse faults. Strike-slip faults involve horizontal movement of rocks.

Geologic units & age: fault in units Agg & Kgd of Kellogg (1994); Agg = plagioclase-microcline-quartz-biotite gneiss, Archean, probably 3.1 to 3.2 Ga (= age of peak metamorphism during intrusion of Spanish Peaks area trondhjemites and tonalites); Kgd = granodiorite of the Tobacco Root Batholith, Late Cretaceous, 71 to 74 Ma

Locality: roadcut on the eastern side of Route 287, Burnt Creek-Bradley Creek Valley, south of the town of Norris, northern Madison County, southwestern Montana, USA (45° 31' 22.38" North latitude, 111° 41' 43.11" West longitude)
