Here it was that one of Norways mostfamous naturalists, a lonely pastor far removed from theouter world, made his great discoveries. Here I myselffirst groped my way along the narrow path of zoologicalresearch. It was a wondrous evening. The lingering flush ofvanished day suffused the northern sky, while themoon hun£ lar^e and round over the mountains behind O O us. Ahead lay Alden and Kinn, like a fairyland risingup from the sea. Tired as I was, I could not seekmy berth ; I must drink in all this loveliness indeep refreshing draughts. It was like balm to thesoul after all the turmoil and friction with crowds ofstrangers. So we went on our way, mostly in fair weather, occa-sionally in fog and rain, through sounds and betweenislands, northwards along the coast of Norway. And the evenings, and the sunsets with thepale moon overhead, white mountains and islands layhushed and dreamlike as a youthful longing! Here andthere past homely little havens with houses around themset in smiling green trees.—Ah ! those snug homes inthe lee of the skerries awake a longing for life andwarmth in the breast. You may shrug your shouldersas much as you like at the beauties of nature, but it is afine thing for a people to have a fair land, be it never sopoor. Never did this seem clearer to me than now whenI was leaving it.
