Many old women, some feeble looking, moved, loaded,through the throng, while homely little dogs, an occasional leancat, and hens and roosters scurried across the street from one shopto another. -*>.^,, We finally reached one of the terraced hillsides which rise 500to 1,000 feet above the harbour with sides so steep that gardenshave a width of seldom more than 20 to 30 feet and often less,while the front of each terrace is generally a stone wall, sometimes12, often more than 6, but most commonly 4 and 5 feet high.One of these hillside slopes is seen in Fig. 19. The terracedgardens are both short and narrow and most of them boundedby stone walls on three sides, the two end walls sloping down thehill so as to form footpaths with occasional steps. Each terrace sloped slightly down the hill and had a low ridgealong the front. Around its entire border a narrow drain orfurrow was arranged to collect surface water and direct it into 50 FIRST GLIMPSES OF JAPAN
