n was mostly set-tled by emigrants from New England soon after the Revolution. Populationof town, 2,745. Town of Watervliet was formed March 7, 1788. Renn.selaerville wastaken off in 1790, Coeymans in 1791, Bethlehem in 1793, Guilderland iu1803, and Niskayuna in 1809. West Troy was incorporated April 30,1836. It is a commercial and manufacturing city opposite the city of Troy,and is especially noted for the extent of its lumber trade, and for being theseat of an extensive United States Arsenal. It contains a bank ; a pyinttngoffice and weekly newspaper, extensive«manufacturers of woolen goods,bells, carriages, &c. Green Island is situated upon an island in the Hudsondirectly opposite Troy. It was incorporated Oct. 14, 1853. It contains W. A-Wilkins Cheap Cash Clothing Store, Whitehall, N.Y. 94 E. H. It is also theseat of considerable lumber trade. Cohoes is a manufacturing city uponthe i\Iohavvk, nine miles fiora Albany. A dam is here erected across theMohawk, and the water is conducted by canals to convenient places for fac-tories. The whole fall is one hundred and three feet, and the water is usedfive times from canals of ditierent levels. The annual aggregate of manu-factured products is nearly jijS,000,000.
