FROM THE UBANGI TO LAKE TCHAD 25 the Ubangi, and west of the Krebedje-Nana-Crampelline, is the Compagnie de lOuhame et de la Nana,which possesses the sole rights for the purchase ofindia-rubber and ivory in this district. On the otherhand, it is bound to plant a certain number of india-rubber trees every year. Another trading companyis the Compagnie Ruet at Dekoa, which has noconcession, and consequently subsists on the freetrade of the districts east of the main road. Marching along this thoroughfare is very mono-tonous, and the surrounding country is quite devoidof interest. We constantly traversed grass thirteenfeet high, and suffered much from the heavy rain andswampy ground.
