Description |
English: A cast copper alloy belt mount, in the form of an anthropomorphic, outward-facing bust. The mount is concavo-convex in section, such that the obverse has a lifelike curved profile. The hair (or possibly a crown) is represented by a number of fine longitudinal/oblique grooves above a horizontal protrusion. The eyes are represented by means of roughly incised crosses (saltires), and the mouth is formed using a single horizontal linear groove, between two longer oblique lines. There is a single rivet for attachment in the centre of the forehead, containing a solid copper alloy rivet. The surface of the mount has a matte dark green patina and the rivets have a dusty, pale green colour. The mount is 10.77mm long and 4.5mm wide. It weighs 1.30g.
There is a similar example illustrated in Mills' "Medieval Artefacts", page 22 Number 36, and dated to the 14th century; see also WAW-831971 for a cruder example. In more general terms, Egan and Pritchard (2002) illustrate similar mounts with perforations for rivets and with grooved decoration, for example Nos. 1084, 1083 and 1270. These mounts date to the late 12th to 14th centuries. |
