DescriptionFEMA - 197 - Photograph by Dave Gatley taken on 09-27-1999 in North Carolina.jpg |
English: Greenville, NC, September 27, 1999 -- Having won the battle against the flooding which made this facility an island, workers made this sign "and the river ran around it" (a parody on the movie). US Cellular's primary cellular switching site for the Northeastern corner of North Carolina was almost lost during Hurricane Floyd and the flooding that followed, which would have cut emergency communications, as well as the ability for the stranded and cut-off citizens of the Northern portion of Pitt Co. to reach out during and after the hurricane. The MTSO (Mobile Telephone Switching Office was saved by essentially two things - monumental human efforts and volunteers who kept the building and the N.C. National Guard building, from flooding. Floating out to the site, a FEMA 60 KW generator (R) which replaced the flooded out 65 KW generator. Photo by DAVE GATLEY/ FEMA News Photo |
