Summary[edit]

Description
English: This image depicts a classic experiment. A small amount of methanol is poured into a large polycarbonate water bottle. After letting the methanol to evaporate a burning splint is held at the mouth of the bottle. This results in an explosion since the bottle is now filled with a combustible vapour (namely methanol) and air. Methanol produces a blue flame but we dissolved a bit of boric acid in our sample which resulted in a green flame. (Boric acid forms an ester with methanol which turns the flame into green.) This experiment is an excellent and fun way to teach the differences between a simple combustion and an explosion. The picture was taken in a collaboration with my colleague, Ildikó Radnai.
Ezután égő gyújtópálcát tartottunk a palack szájához. A képet Radnai Ildikó kollégámmal közösen készítettük.
