By the laws of the land, Indians are punished by whipping on thebare back with a raw-hide rope—twelve stiipes for insubordination,drunkenness, or idleness. The custom among the authorities has been topunish whenever they deem it proper, with as many lashes as they please,though there is less punishment now than in former times. One prefect,who was exceedingly tyrannical in his behavior to these people, wasrecalled, as the Indians all signed a petition against him to tbe Presi-dent. He was displaced and afterwards banished to Brazil. On thevoyage down the Mamore river, the crew filled the boat with water atmidnight while the ex-prefect was sleeping. They swam to the bank,and he was drowned. Cayuba introduced me to his vrife—a fine-looking, fat, cheerful In-dian. Juana Jua Cayuba was very industrious ; she superintended thehired women moulding earthen jars, which are used in manufacturing

The Indian men take to the European fancy of dress. On Sundays,before the authorities call upon the prefect, they take off the camecita,and put on trousers, coat, vest, boots, and hat; each one carries a cane,the signal of his office. On such occasions they walk with the mostamusing air of importance.
