| Description | Exotic architecture of the Shanghai old town district. One sometimes does not even realize it in the rabbit hole like maze of streets and bylanes and alleys in the Shanghai old town district but the sudden appearance of a gate like this means that's a new street. The street names are also sometimes in decorative frames which resemble light boxes. Not all buildings in the Shanghai old town district are originals- many have been reconstructed in the style and decor of buildings in the late Qing Dynasty. Many of these reconstructed buildings have swing doors which reach to the ground, the lattice windows and the graceful roofs with upturned gables as seen here. These make for fascinating viewing and match perfectly with the image of how foreigners actually China to be. There are some Europe style buildings here, (like the white one on the right) but these are so constructed that they fit in the overall scheme of things and do not contradict the styles of old Shanghai. Which is creditable,coming from a city with in your face commercialism and an endless quest for money and growth. (Shanghai, China, May 2017) |
