Summary[edit]

Description

East Window, stained glass by Burlison & Grylls, 1908. War damaged, but repaired. Erected as directed in will of Lt-Col. Albert Tanner (1836-1907) in memory of his father Thomas Tanner (1788-1863), Mayor of Exeter in 1858/9, retired Captain, Royal India Navy and a Magistrate, formerly of the Honorable East Indian Company's service and Commodore at Surathe (Source: /gracesguide.co.uk [1]). Thomas Tanner married Bridget Harvey (1791-1868), born at Liskard, Cornwall, a daughter of John Harvey, Esq., of Liskeard, and a grand-daughter of Waltham Savery Esq., of Slade in Devon.

Left outer: upper panel, Christ and the haul of fish; lower, Christ calms the waters. Right outer: upper panel, Christ preaches from the boat; lower, Christ raises Peter from the waves.

In loving memory of Captain Thomas Tanner, formerly of the Hon'ble East Indian Company's service and Commodore at Surat. During his distinguished career he received the thanks of Government on many occasions. He was Mayor of this City in 1859. Born at Cullompton 23rd March 1788. Died in London 28th October 1863 aged 75 years. Also to the Beloved memory of Bridget Savery his wife, daughter of John Harvey Esqre of Liskeard and grandaughter [sic] of Waltham Savery Esqre of Slade in this County. Born at Liskeard 7th May 1791. Died at Exeter 18th Nov: 1868 aged 77. Their remains repose in Kensal Green Cemetery. This memorial was erected to their memory by their son Lt. Colonel Albert Tanner formerly of the 72nd Duke of Albany's own Highlanders, and of the Royal Fusiliers, who served with the former Regiment throughout the operations in Central India. [Led] pursuit of the Rebels in 1858-59. Born at Exeter [7th] Jany 1836. Died in London (11th) Sept (1907).

Albert Tanner (1836-1907): London Gazette, 17.12.1867, records Albert Tanner's promotion from Lieutenant to Captain, 72nd Foot, by payment; 11.07.1882 records retirement of Captain and Brevet Major as honorary Lieut. Colonel, Royal Fusiliers, City of London Regt., as of 01.07.1881. Times obituary, 13.09.1907: London Standard, 28.10.1907, records probate will, 'Lieut.Colonel Albert Tanner, aged 71, of Egerton Mansions, Brompton Road, S.W., late of the Royal Fusiliers, who served in Central India in 1858-9, left a sum not exceeding £400 to the Dean and Chapter of Exeter Cathedral for a stained glass window to be placed in the cathedral in memory his parents. His estate is valued at £12,552.'
