The proper position, when sitting, is to havethe drawing considerably lower than the waist,and to sit erect without throwing any weight onthe left hip, elbow, or hand. The drawing canbe seen better, the whole of it being visible atone glance; and much greater freedom in thestyle must result from the removal of the realconstraint of the right arm. In fact, the object for which so much issacrificed in the false position, is gained in thetrue one, without any sacrifice at all. It isadmitted that in the false position, there is notso much liberty for the hand to disobey the eye—it cannot go so far or so fast in an erroneousdirection; but this mode of controlling the handis quite a delusion, as in the true position it willhave much greater scope to obey the mind,6

IN GUITAR-PLAYING. 33 which, after all, is the only true source whencecapability of drawing is derived. The advantages, therefore, of commencingdrawing in the true position are twofold; first,with regard to the attainment of the art, and,secondly, with regard to the preservation ofhealth and of beauty of figure. IN GUITAR-PLAYING. In playing on the guitar, in some instances, theright knee is elevated to support the instrument,and the right shoulder is slightly raised. This isavoided by the far preferable position of Sor.— (See Plate III.) The practice alluded to,therefore, tends further to throw the lateraldeviation toward the right shoulder. More frequently, perhaps, the guitar is restedin the lap, the left foot is placed on a stool, andthe left shoulder is raised. This of course tendsto throw the deviation in that direction.
