Font: Doulton &» Co., Lambeth, London. tesques alternate with compositions in low relief which might come from thehand of a painter. Thus, in the Font which is the subject of our next illus-tration, the lower part, and especially the sustaining columns, are covered witha delicate tracery of leaves, or paneled in a minute diamond-shaped pattern,while the upper projecting portion is separated by smaller columns into panels,each of which is occupied by a Scriptural scene, chosen with reference to thepurpose of the font. The beauty of these panels cannot adequately berepresented by any engraving; but our picture will show the complexity of INDUSTRIAL ART. 29

We can see also that the middle panel turned towards thespectator represents The Slaughter of the Innocents, and that The Judgmentof Solomon and The Adoration of the Wise Men are the subjects respect-ively of the right and left panels. The Dove of Peace broods over thefont. Each column is wreathed with the acanthus or the lily. There is asolidity and strength in the architectural arrangement which satisfies the eye. The columns seemworthy supportersof the heavy entab-lature, while thefinish of detail isnever allowed tomask the construc-tion. This is trueArt, whether in achurch or a cabinet.Industrial Artdoes not fullyachieve its end un-less all articles ofdomestic use areredeemed from thehopeless uglinessinto which theyhave fallen, so that
