Text Appearing Before Image:
l away unobserved, they fellasleep, and when they woke up they were in thegoods yard at Truro en route for Penzance. Scared out of their wits, the youngsters gotdown to the ground with the intention of walkingback home, little dreaming that Plymouth wasfifty miles away. It commenced to rain heavily, and they sought shelter in another truck, wherethey again fell asleep and were taken to Bristol. When they were discovered they were not onlysadly bewildered, but almost exhausted from lackof food. Meanwhile, at Plymouth, there was con-siderable stir; it seemed incredible that half a dozenchildren could disappear so completely. It wasnot until the second day that a police telegramfrom Bristol brought relief to the sorrowing parents, who, in due course, received back their erring off-spring. The railway company only prosecutedthe juveniles for the sake of example, but themagistrates dismissed the delinquents, holding thattheir offence was trespass rather than fraud withwhich they were charged.
Text Appearing After Image:
PLATE XXX. L. & S.W.R. COLLECTING DOG, WIMBLEDON NELL.ORPHAN GIRLS. L. & S.W.R. ORPHANAGE, WOKING. ALL CHANGE! 189 In the course of what is only a brief and chattyreview of our British railways, together with a fewin other parts of the world, chiefly for comparison,we have touched upon many interesting phases ofwhat is a great national industry. Wherever wetravel on our iron roads we cannot fail to be struckwith the never-ceasing efforts of the railwayworkers, from the highest to the lowest, to furtherthe comfort and safety of the passengers—efforts, alas! that for not a few of them entail maimingand even death. Kailway Orphanages shouldunfailingly enlist our interest and support. Onmany of our railway systems are collecting dogs(Plate XXX), that travel from station to station, gathering: the contributions that should not beviewed as charity, but as a duty which travellersowe as estimable and self-sacrificing body of menas can be found in the service of the public.
