I was happy to see the London Underground using the trans flag. Trans acceptance and inclusion in pride this year was the best I've seen. Every year, it seems to get better. (Although, the terf incident this year shows improvement is still needed.) There are times, though, where the 'love' theme reveals its multifarious shortcomings. One is when it's paired with the trans flag. Transgender identities are not about love. These things do not go together. Indeed, 'love' isn't necessarily all that suited to LGB issues either. Much discrimination against all LGBTQ people stems from gender normativity, not from concern about love or even lust. I can see how the 'born this way' campaign tactic does recommend a pivot towards love, which is an effect of the defects of that tactic. Demanding liberty and equality instead would be more inclusive and implies a more honest embracing of diversity. |
