View of Eureka, California China Town in 1885

Summary[edit]

Description

View of Eureka, California China Town in 1885 partially shown on right of image. As shown on File:Sanborn_Fire_Insurance_Map_from_Eureka,_Humboldt_County,_California._LOC_sanborn00533_001-3.jpg In 1886, after the Chinese Expulsion (February 1885), the peaky row houses on right side of 4th street were listed as Vacant. The building set back from 4th street with hip roof is a former Chinese Laundry. The entire block of E & F streets between 4th and 5th was called “China town” and contained three laundries, a wagon shop and several other businesses.

China Town, Eureka is on the right hand side of the street in this photo. At upper right up the hill is the Congregational Church, Centennial Hall is the next building to the west towards camera. Tall, long building at 4th & F (in front of the white faced Centennial Hall) is the Times-Telegraph News office and printing shop. The houses across from Centennial Hall and the Church are listed as “dwellings” on the Sanborn Map.

“Palace Stables” is also known as Rick’s Livery, at corner of F & 4th.

The corner building at left foreground was a fishmarket.
