Summary[edit]

Description
English: Geographic distribution of the Eurasian reed warbler (Acrocephalus baeticatus)

Key:

Breeding range

Resident year-round

Non-breeding range

The taxonomy is based on the IOC:

  • Gill, Frank; Donsker, David; Rasmussen, Pamela, eds. (January 2022). "Bushtits, leaf warblers, reed warblers". IOC World Bird List Version 12.1. International Ornithologists' Union. Retrieved 12 June 2022.

Note that BirdLife International (and thus the IUCN) lumps the Eurasian reed warbler with the African reed warbler.

The distribution map is based on:

  • Dyrcz, A. (2006). "Eurasian Reed-warbler". In del Hoyo, J.; Elliott, A.; Sargatal, J. (eds.). Handbook of the Birds of the World. Vol. 11: Old Word flycatchers to Old World Warblers. Barcelona, Spain: Lynx Edicions. p. 620. ISBN 978-84-96553-06-4.

In addition within Europe the EBCC Atlas was used (for example to include Corsica and Sardinia within the range): Noble, David G.; et al. (2020). "Acrocephalus scirpaceus Common reed-warbler". In Keller, Verena (ed.). European Breeding Bird Atlas 2: Distribution, Abundance and Change. Barcelona: European Bird Census Council and Lynx Edicions. pp. 624–625. ISBN 978-84-16728-38-1

For the subspecies ammon on the Libya-Egypt border:

  • Hering, J.; Winkler, H.; Steinheimer, F.D. (2016). "A new subspecies of Eurasian Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus in Egypt". Bulletin of the British Ornithologists' Club. 136: 101–128.

For the subspecies avicenniae on the Red Sea coast

  • Babbington, J.; Boland, C.; Kirwan, G.M.; Alsuhaibany, A.; Shirihai, H.; Schweizer, M. (2019). "Confirmation of Acrocephalus scirpaceus avicenniae (Aves: Acrocephalidae) from mangroves on the Red Sea coast near Jazan, southwest Saudi Arabia". Zoology in the Middle East. 65 (3): 201–207. doi:10.1080/09397140.2019.1604470

The IOC taxonomy treats the reed warblers in the Iberian Peninsula and north Africa as a subspecies of the African reed warbler (Acrocephalus baeticatus ambiguus). This is based on:

  • Olsson, U.; Rguibi-Idrissi, H.; Copete, J.L.; Arroyo Matos, J.L.; Provost, P.; Amezian, M.; Alström, P.; Jiguet, F. (2016). "Mitochondrial phylogeny of the Eurasian/African reed warbler complex (Acrocephalus, Aves). Disagreement between morphological and molecular evidence and cryptic divergence: A case for resurrecting Calamoherpe ambigua Brehm 1857". Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution. 102: 30–44. doi:10.1016/j.ympev.2016.05.026.

Xeno-canto use the IOC taxonomy and provide a range map here: https://xeno-canto.org/species/Acrocephalus-scirpaceus

The base map uses data from Natural Earth https://www.naturalearthdata.com/downloads/ (50m files). The map was draw using QGIS 3.24. The projection is EPSG:3857 WGS 84/Pseudo-Mercator. The option to output an SVG file is broken so that the output includes features outside the area of interest. The extra features were removed and the distribution added using Inkscape 1.1 running under Windows 11.
