| Description |
English: Etruria Staircase Lock This is the narrowboater's eye view of the bottom section of the 'staircase' lock. This type of lock is used to gain height rapidly in a short distance. This particular example, is a two-stage one and has three sets of gates altogether (the Bingley Five Riser is a five-stage lock and has six sets of gates in total). Normally, the middle lock gate (the one seen in this picture) is bigger than a conventional lock (about 7m instead of a typical 'normal' one of about 3.5m). This makes them nearly twice as heavy and a lot harder to manipulate! This type of lock has to be worked in a particular sequence as you can quite easily end up with water coming over the top of the gates if you get it wrong! |
