The Britishcolonists, however, formed a company to settle the Ohiovalley, and the first clash of arms took place about fifty milessoutheast of Fort Duquesne, now Pittsburg (July 4, 1754). Within a year the two parent nations had drifted into acondition of war, though without any formal proclamation.Campaigns were planned: (1) against Eort Duquesne, tocontrol access to the Ohio valley; (2) against Niagara, to cutoff Canada from Ohio ; (3) against Crown Point, and thence toQuebec. The first expedition, under Braddock, failed throughunskillful generalship; the second was abandoned after afutile advance to Oswego, on Lake Ontario; and the thirdresulted only in the building of Fort William Henry by theBritish and of Ticonderoga by the French. Meanwhile Maria Theresa, smarting under concessions madeto Frederick the Great during the Austrian Succession War,was intriguing with France to crush Prussia, and to gain to One of Her Majestys High-landers.
