Summary[edit]

Description Built in 1963-1965, this Modern International-style skyscraper was designed by Natalie de Blois and Bruce Graham of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill for the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States to serve as their Chicago headquarters. The building was built on land formerly owned by the Chicago Tribune, with the sale of land coming with the stipulation that the building should feature a plaza along Michigan Avenue in front so as to preserve the view of the Tribune Tower from further south on Michigan Avenue, as well as from the Chicago River. The plaza in front of the building is today known as Pioneer Court, named for Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable, the first non-indigenous inhabitant of Chicago, being of French and African descent, who established a fur trading post at the location in the 1780s. The building is very much a textbook example of an International Style skyscraper, with a box-like form, ribbon windows, vertical mullions and exterior columns, Pilotis at the base, a large front plaza, and a low-slope roof. The building today houses office space, as well as a studio in the ground floor for WMAQ-TV, also known as NBC 5 Chicago.
