Português: Equipa de Natação do do Club Sport Marítimo, campeã da Madeira em 1945. Complexo do Lido, 1945. O Club Sport Marítimo teria sido fundado a 20 de Setembro de 1910, embora só venha a ter estatuto na assembleia de 28 de Novembro do mesmo ano, já em plena República. No entanto, nos meados de 1910 já os jogadores teriam envergado as faixas verde e rubro numa afirmação de classe que aspirava a outra situação de Progresso e Bem-Estar. O Clube nasceu das aspirações da classe marítima da baixa de Santa Maria Maior, que desde os finais do século XIX assistia a jogos de futebol no Campo de D. Carlos, rapidamente baptizado com a República de Campo Almirante Reis, mas nos quais não podia participar. A agremiação teria nascido de duas associações fundadas pouco antes: o Club Sports Madeira, em cuja organização se encontra Humberto dos Passos Freitas, que aparece a organizar jogos a 5 de Setembro de 1909 e o Club Português de Sport Marítimo, que a 27 de Agosto de 1910 aparece a organizar e a vencer um match de foot-ball com uma equipa do republicano cruzador português Adamastor, que a 5 de Outubro seguinte haveria de bombardear o palácio das Necessidades, em Lisboa. Nascido dos ideais republicanos da classe marítima do Funchal contra os senhores ingleses, especialmente os da Western Telegraph Company , os funcionários da Casa da Linha, a Santa Clara, mas também os Manatas, alcunha por que eram conhecidos os habitantes do centro da cidade, que viviam para além do Largo do Pelourinho. Ao longo da Primeira República o Marítimo deslocar-se-á a Lisboa, a convite do Benfica, em 1912 e às Canárias, em 1914, onde um dos jogos chega a ser interrompido por desacatos dos canários, tendo um dos jogadores madeirenses partido uma perna, recebendo na Madeira o Benfica, em 1922, ano em que volta a Lisboa a convite do mesmo clube e ao Porto, onde viria a derrotar o Futebol Clube do Porto, então campeão de Portugal.
