Français : Épicerie Labrecque, 337, 3371/2 (aujourd’hui vers le 1275), 2e Avenue, Limoilou, vers 1930 « Léger Labrecque ouvre son commerce vers 1925. Nous apercevons sur la photographie sa fille Mathilde (Mathilda), âgée de 17 ans, qui pose fièrement devant une superbe balance Dayton. Ghislaine Boivin, fille de Mathilde, raconte qu’à cette époque, sa mère tricote des vêtements pour bébés qu’elle vend à l’épicerie. Son grand-père Léger, habile menuisier, récupère les caisses d’oranges et fabrique des chaises. Même si l’Anglo Pulp (aujourd’hui Papiers White Birch) vient d’amorcer ses activités en 1928, la grande crise des années 1930 touche une partie de la population de Limoilou et ralentit pour un moment la progression du développement urbain du quartier. Il ne faut donc pas se surprendre si le propriétaire de l’épicerie affiche «Pas de crédit». À remarquer, sur les tablettes, tous les produits qu’on trouve toujours dans nos supermarchés, notamment le thé Salada, les raisins Sun-Maid et les boîtes de cacao Fry’s. Léger Labrecque, devenu surintendant des bâtiments à la Ville de Québec, abandonne en 1941 l’épicerie et Mathilde ouvrira, au même endroit, un magasin de coupons (tissu à la verge). » – Jacques Boutet |
