L'Empereur Hirohito annonce à son peuple que son pays devra accepter l'«inacceptable» à savoir les conditions imposées par les Alliés à Potsdam.

Empereur Hirohito«L'usage d'une bombe cruelle nous oblige à cesser la guerre par suite de l'inhumanité de nos ennemis. Il nous faut accepter l'inacceptable et supporter l'insupportable. Que tout le pays comme une seule famille où la tradition se transmet de fils en petit-fils, garde une foi solide dans le caractère indestructible de la Terre des Dieux».

Le général Douglas MacArthur est désigné comme Commandant Suprême des Puissances Alliées (S.C.A.P.). Les Soviétiques traversent la Mandchourie et pénètrent en Corée jusqu'au 38ème parallèle.

Avec le décalage horaire, le Président Truman annonce la nouvelle à son peuple le 14 août.
