Summary[edit]

Entrance to the Old Louvre Courtyard
Photographer
Dennis Jarvis from Halifax, Canada
Title
Entrance to the Old Louvre Courtyard
Description
English: The Palais du Louvre in Paris: entrance from the north through the Pavillon de Marengo into the old Louvre courtyard, the Cour Carrée. Visible in the background is the Pavillon des Arts (the central pavilion of the south facade of the Cour Carrée) through which can be seen the entrance facade of the chapel of the Institut de France on the far (south) side of the River Seine. This is no accident: Louis Le Vau, the architect of the Institut's building (at that time known as the Collège des Quatre-Nations), intentionally designed it so that the entrance could be seen from this point.
Date 4 July 2014, 07:15
Notes
English: For more information on Louis Le Vau's designs for the Collège des Quatre-Nations and its alignment with the Louvre, see Ballon 1999, pp. 32–49. This general site plan of 1660 for a project by Le Vau for the Louvre shows his intended alignment of the Collège with the north and south entrances of the Louvre courtyard (Ballon 1999, p. 37, fig. 19). Construction began in 1662, but the college did not open until 1688.
