Mertensla maritima. Oyster-plant. BORAGINACE^,. 93 tisually not so tall, and the leaves (or at least the outer ones) ofthe barren shoots are abruptly contracted into the petiole, and acumi-nate at the apex. The blotches on the leaves of the plant in the spe-cimens I have seen are larger, and have a greater tendency to becomeconHuent. Ihe calyx-teeth are deeper, and the fruiting calyx is morebellshaped. Ihe flowers are very similar, at first rose, then blue, asin 1. angustifoha, but not nearly so highly coloured; the corolla is thesame m shape, but usually a little larger. The nucules are moreacute at the summit, and rather smaller. The hairs m the stem andleaves are stifter, so that the plant is much harsher to the touch Ihave not seen P. officinalis with the stamens exserted beyond thecorolla tube.
