Description
Español: Diagrama de desmineralización y remineralización del esmalte dental en presencia de ácido y flúor en saliva y líquido de placa. El ácido es producido por bacterias en el líquido de la placa que consumen azúcar; esto a su vez disuelve (desmineraliza) parcialmente los cristales de hidroxiapatita carbonatada del esmalte. El fluoruro en el líquido de la placa contrarresta este proceso, haciendo que el esmalte se remineralice con una capa superficial de una sustancia similar a la fluoroapatita, que es más difícil de disolver.
English: Diagram of demineralization and remineralization of dental enamel in the presence of acid and fluoride in saliva and plaque fluid. Acid is produced by bacteria in plaque fluid that consume sugar; this in turn partially dissolves (demineralizes) the enamel's carbonated hydroxyapatite crystals. Fluoride in plaque fluid counteracts this process, causing the enamel to remineralize with a surface coating of a fluoroapatite-like substance, which is harder to dissolve.
