ial sent foranother man, presumably the bank manager, tocome and examine them. The report being favour-able, he offered 22 frs. for each sovereign; refusing, with a shudder, to touch the notes. Kens Scotch blood rose up in revolt; but seeingthat it was the only way, I acquiesced, and wereceived our receipt, leaving the official chuckling. Between Les Fonts and Neuchatel, are two roads. One is marked with the ordinary broad red of the Koutes Nationales on the Taride maps, the otheris marked Routes Impraticables. Text Appearing After Image:
A DASH FOR THE ALPS Bernese-Oberland to Mont Blanc. The sun, a ballof blazing red behind us, cast its dying light overthe scene, tipping the snow peaks with that beautifulrosy glow so peculiar to the Alps. As we gazed silently upon the scene, grey shadowscrept quickly over the snow, driving the rosy tinthigher and higher, till finally for a moment, itrested only upon the summits of the highest; andthen faded, leaving all grey and cold. Plunging into the shadow of the pines the roadwinds down the hill till it reaches the waters,3000 ft. below, and follows the edge of the Lake toNeuchatel. From Neuchatel to Berne the road traverses acountry crossed and intersected with conflictingroads, and here we were unfortunate enough to loseour way. It was later than we expected when wereached Berne, with its Gothic minster high abovethe rushing waters. After lunch, we followed theAar to the busy little town of Thun beneath thefine old castle of Zahringen-Kiburg, with itsglorious views of the snow.
