A CHArTER OF ADVENTURES manoeuvred till at last we faced the ascending roadand leapt forward the short distance to the nextturn. In one of the circular tunnels, where therewas scarcely light enough to see, we came upon aflock of sheep and goats ; the noise (of the enginesounded like continuous thunder, terrifying theanimals and causing much trouble before they couldbe got past, their driver regarding us with super-stitious awe as though we were spirits from anotherworld, and Merc^d^s a fiery dragon from the netherregions. At the summit of the precipice and alsoof the waterfall, we reached the tiny hamlet ofPianazzo, but without stopping rushed up the steeproad before us which now clung to the face of asloping mountain similar to the Stelvio or Gotthard,and tame after what we had passed. Here againalmost the whole road passes through avalanchegalleries, and as we were now enveloped by the cloudsthe light was exceedingly bad.
