nie,two short and beautiful drives; the road ever risingclimbs amidst the hills through fine scenery. Bothplaces were out of season, closed and bordering onthe snow-line. From Lourdes we travelled to Pau,ever in view of the snow heights, and from thereagain headed for the hills, determined this time topass through their midst and not to be turned back,as before, almost at the border. The little villageof St. Jean Pied de Port lies at the gates of Spain,at the foot of the Koncesvalles Pass, and here wespent our last night in France. A stroke of unex-pected good fortune was thrown to us by Fate. Thepatron of the little hotel we stayed at, offered, for apaltry 30 francs, a free pass into Spain. In theordinary course of events we should have had todeposit at the frontier some 2000 francs. With theremembrance of Italy and our still unreturned 600francs in our minds, we literally jumped at his offer,and with a promptness that visibly astonished minehost possessed ourselves of the permit.182

IN THE LAND OF THE DONS Armed with the usual passavant we quittedFrance early next morning, and crossing thetumbling waters of a stream, entered Spain. Onlya small hut guards the Spanish end of the bridge,the principal douane lying some distance from thefrontier. A soldier mounted Mercedes, and weclimbed quickly up the dreary Val Carlos, where somany lives have paid the penalty of their ownersconvictions. At the custom house our permitacted like a charm, and after a lenient examinationof the luggage we were allowed to proceed. Smilingupon the polite oflScials we left the little douane andbegan our climb over the Roncesvalles Pass. Thispass cannot compare with the beauties of the Stelvioor the wildness of the Gotthard, or any of the otherlovely passes of the Alps. It is chiefly interestingfrom its close connection with the history of Europe.We were indeed following in the footsteps ofinnumerable armies from the time that Rome senther legions to explore what lay beyond the greatrange of
