IN THE LAND OF THE DONS way we commenced to rise up the steep Hilltowards the town, and, as we climbed, the longline of the massive Boman aqueduct burstmajestically into view. Mounting higher we enteredinto a network of narrow streets emerging at lastin an open flaza before the doors of its solemncathedral. We slept that night in a little hotel cunninglyhidden in a narrow street, its comforts equalled onlyby the hearty reception that we received. Segovia,with her aqueduct as proof, can claim to have beenin a state of civilisation when her sister cities werebut bending to the conquerors rule. From theSierra de Fuenfria it carries the clear water to thecity, a distance of over ten miles. Unlike theAqueduct of Claudius, whose broken arches we hadpassed on the Koman Campagna, it is undamaged,and still performs its health-giving office.
