What a haven of rest must the old building seem to the half-frozen wanderer stumbling through the snow, and what feelings of thankfulness must be experienced when he reaches its open doors. All honour, then, to the brave fatheis upon the lonely summits. A little past the hospice lies the summit, deep in snow, merely a narrow ledge, and the watershed of the Danube and the Rhine. WHERE HEROES TROD and by the many windings of the Rhine reaches theNorth Sea : the other flows through the territory ofthe great white Czar. A faint sprinkle of snow beat against the glassscreen, warning us not to linger, and we plungeddown the other side into the beautiful Vorarlberg. We regretted leaving the Tirol with all ourhearts, many of the pleasantest days had beenspent amidst its exquisite scenery and among itshappy and sincere people. At Lazen we passedalong the repaired road over which the vast mass ofdebris had poured ; the result of the enormous land-slip in 1892. As we left the snow above us and descended intothe green valley, the sky began to clear and hereand there large patches of blue appeared, growingever larger. Presently the sun burst through themists, bringing with him summer and compelling usto remove our furs and don lighter clothing.
