Inthe new we stayed at a quiet little Albergo,thoroughly Italian, where the standard food ismacaroni, a most tasty and delightful dish to ourunaccustomed palates. La Citta Alta, the oldtown, set upon a hill, is worthy of a visit, con-taining several jewels of art. We walked backto the hotel by the old ramparts overlooking theplains of Lombardy. From Bergamo we travelled to Lecco, and untilComo were on familiar ground. A glimpse of thelake at Como and we turned south making straightfor Milan over exceedingly bad roads. As we were fittinga new cover many gathered round us, and a motleygroup they were. Their legs, bare to the knee,were covered with a shiny deposit of mud. Bothmen and women worked on an even scale thatwould have satisfied the most rabid suffragist.From what I could gather from them, thewhole ground is flooded some two feet deepand allowed to drain; in six weeks or so acrop of maize or corn springs up, is cut, collected,and the ground sown afresh and reflooded. Asmany as eight to ten fresh crops are grown eachyear.
