In thestreets we obtained some protection against the fullforce of the gale, though the snow was thicklyfalling, causing us some difiiculty in locating anhotel, for the streets were deserted and pedestriansfew and far between. When we eventually reachedthe hotel we keenly appreciated the bright fire andexcellent dinner after the biting cold outside. Nextday the weather was good, cold but fine. Too short was our stay in Burgos, too short tothoroughly visit its many monuments, but longenough to gather a lasting memory of the glorious186

IN THE LAND OF THE DONS cathedral with its beautiful ambulatory, itsexquisite chapels and quiet cloisters; of the tombof the Cid : the Myo Cid el Campeador, of his oldchronicler. Many objects in Burgos are closely con-nected with this national hero, a hero of both Moorsand Christians by the way. From the cathedralwe climbed to the ruined Castillo, upon the summitof a bare grassy hill above Burgos and commandingan extensive view over its bleak surroundings. Inthese old walls were the Campeador and Ximenamarried— Within his hall at Burgos the king prepares the feast, and two hundred years later, the place resoundedwith similar rejoicings when Edward of Englandand Eleanor of Castile were joined together. Manya fierce strusfale have the broken walls and ruinedtowers taken part in, even defying WelUngtonunder their French defenders, and baffling all hisskill to capture them.
